Imani Gospel Singers (IGS), a Montreal-based choir, was founded in 1993, by Marcia Bailey, in response to a number of individuals expressing a strong desire to sing in a spiritual, dynamic, and versatile group. The group was born out of a larger music ministry within the Union United Church, one of the oldest black congregations in Canada.
IGS’ mission is to touch, inspire and uplift listeners with positive messages conveyed via the powerful vehicle of gospel music. “Imani” means faith in Swahili, a language widely spoken in several East African countries. The choir’s name was chosen for its meaning and symbolic reference to the African roots of gospel music.
According to Marcia, “It’s about the message and the sincerity with which it is conveyed. If at least one person is blessed or positively inspired each time we sing, then our purpose has been fulfilled”.
IGS members come from all walks of life, but share the common vision of using their talents to praise the Divine and minister through song. Strong in their diversity they believe that faith, talent and music transcend differences, touch, uplift and bring people together.
For more than two decades, Imani Gospel Singers has been solicited to perform in numerous church and community fundraising events, concerts, festivals, various corporate events and wedding celebrations; and on many occasions, as background artists for major local and international talents. Highlights include back-up vocals and features in live performances by Paul Anka, Michael Bolton, Ginette Reno, Nikki Yanofsky, Ranee Lee and Florence K.
The choir’s repertoire reflects the rich history and diverse genres of gospel music, including spirituals, negro spirituals, African, jazz, traditional and contemporary gospel songs.
2017 marks a very special year for IGS as the group will be releasing their long awaited first original album. A rich and collective music project, written and recorded throughout 2016, the album was directed by Marcia Bailey and produced by Joel Campbell. It includes songwriting contributions from choir and band members.
